Wire metamaterial filled metallic resonators

In this work we study electromagnetic properties of a resonator recently suggested for the search axions---a hypothetical candidate to explain dark matter. A wire medium loaded (called plasma haloscope when used matter) consists box filled with dense array parallel wires electrically connected top and bottom walls. We show that homogenization model works without mesoscopic corrections, quality factor $Q$ at frequency our interest drops versus growth volume $V$ until it is dominated by resistive losses in wires. find even room temperature metals like copper can give factors thousands---an order magnitude higher than originally assumed. Our theoretical results both unloaded were confirmed building an experimental prototype. discuss ways further improve resonators.
